There are different ways you can use purchased POP / IMAP email, compared to the free email forwarding:
- Forwarding with POP / IMAP - You can have the email go to your physical POP / IMAP email address, but set it up to still automatically forward email to another address. This forwarding setup is advantageous over the free email forwarding, as the spam settings can more easily be modified for the incoming POP / IMAP email.

- Webmail - Use the POP / IMAP email address on a webmail interface in a web browser. (Not possible with the free email forwarding). The webmail is accessible by going to webmail.example.com (replace "example.com" with your domain name)
- Connect to a free Gmail account. With this setup, you can send and receive your custom domain email right from within a free Gmail account, clear up storage space from the paid POP / IMAP email server, and utilize the free Gmail storage space and Gmail interface.
